Kitchenware Beware!

I have always hated sieves. I just do not understand why people tolerate them in their kitchens- I know they have their uses but they are completely impossible to clean and always end up with funny, grimey bits stuck in them. So you can only imagine my delight when given the opportunity to take my revenge, using one to create a mould with texture in the hot shop!

My current project requires me to make a mould to be used in the hot shop to create 30 to 50 pieces. These will be assembled to produce something larger which is inspired by nature (biomimicry).

Blowing into the sieve.
Stretched out glass from yanking of the sieve!

There were a few problems with using the sieve; the glass did tend to stick to it quite a bit. Although when it cooled down the sieve could be pulled off with tweezers. Even though at some points it was a bit of a fight it was extremely satisfying to remove my work from the annealer to find eloquent (for the most part) pieces with delicate detailing.

Overall I had a great couple of days experimenting like this although I think I’m actually going to take my project in a different direction (keep your eyes peeled for more!), concentrating more on the overall form- I didn’t get to much choice about this when using my sieve. I can now happily say I have had my revenge- completely destroying the sieve. The world will be a happier place with one less! Oh, and the outcome was rather lovely!

It survived!
Beautiful close up of texture.
