Last Friday I had eventually organised my CAD work enough to go and get some laser etching done!
Whilst over all laser etching/cutting looks quite easy I think I made it a lot harder for myself by deciding to do it on circles. Especially considering that I couldn't even cut glass circles out myself! (Don't panic, I know how to now!)
Post-engraving. No visible details. Not good. |
The aim of laser etching I suppose was really just to see if mark making on the surface would be visible in the shadows when they were lit. But mostly it was just because I was pretty interested in what would happen and wanted to see.
Light engrave x 2. Outer circle. |
The first one I engraved on the lightest setting as I had no idea any of them looked like and I didn't want to over do it. I also engraved an outer circle first to check that I had everything aligned properly. The light engrave was barely even visible so I repeated the light engrave directly on top (but not the outer line) to make it a bit more substantial. It definitely is slightly clearer but still isn't really as visible as I would have liked it and the outer circle looks a bit of a state. So I tried another!
Heavy engrave. |
This one was engraved on the heavy setting and didn't have the outer circle (I just hoped for the best when I was aligning it and it turned out okay). It is clearer but looks terribly messy and has made the glass look a bit funny in some places- definitely over done!
Overall I prefer the first one. Whilst this could be a really good technique to use sometimes it is definitely not right for me for this project! But hey, at least I got to play with lasers..
