This should really be a rounding up of the project but as it's still in progress it's going to be more of an update and an explanation of my future plans.
I am basically ready now to start the actual casting stage (the final making stage) of my project. The mould is a bit of a weird one, it's shallow but then it has all the little details sticking up. I think it's probably really simple and I'm just not seeing it so I'm not too sure- I really need to speak to someone about this. Hopefully though all will go well and I will have a lens.
If I was to do this whole project again I would simplify it from the start. I have no idea why I thought I would actually be able to make my original design, I had some weird ideas of Rhino grandeur. Actually having a stronger concept from the start might also be a good thing as I think I've worked in a really process led manor. I personally think this is fine as I didn't really know much about any of the technology so it enabled me to just make the most of it rather then holding myself back. But I'm really torn, my concept suffered but then I learned more- there should be more of a balance.
There were constant barriers throughout this project which I obviously wasn't expecting- mainly how long everything would take. I had a fairly accurate idea of how long I would be spending on the actual glass things but I didn't really know about the computer side. It turns out that side of the project took ages!
My future plans for this project are built around having cast a successful lens! Then it's onto how to actually project the surface patterns- that is of course if they work like that and are able to be projected. This is sort of where the slumping I am currently doing comes into place- I am hoping to start experimenting on the lighting situation with them!
I have honestly never worried about a studio project as much as I have with Otherwise Unobtainable. The uncertainty of everything was just about killing me. Whilst it is pretty exciting doing all of these new things, never having any idea how they'll turn out (if they turn out at all) is really tiring. Aside from all the worry though, I have really enjoyed this project and I'm looking forward to continuing with it.
