Josephine Pryde & Anthony McCall

Well last night I was in the library and when I should have been starting to write an essay on research techniques (woahh.. don't get too excited) I was actually reading magazines. It ended up being quite useful though as I found two artists, that I've never came across before, who's work is incredibly relevant to my own current studio practice.

Josephine Pryde, Embryos & Estate Agents. 2011.

A combination of macro lens photography and retouched contemporary medical images; referencing the history of both commercial and fine art photography. Also the impact of technological advances in imaging upon scientific discovery. These images are specifically informed by the history of experimentation and innovation in embryology.

Anthony McCall, Line Describing A Cone. 1973.

A beam of white light emitted from a film projector positioned at one end of a darkened room. Passing through the projector is an animated film of a thin circling line that frame by frame becomes complete.

Over the course of 30 minutes this line of light traces the circumference of the circle as a projection on the far wall. While the beam takes the form of a 3D hollow cone.

Mist from smoke machines gives the beam of light a greater density, making it appear almost tangible.
