Nicholas Lees

One of the main designers I have taken inspiration from during my research is Nicholas Lees, who works in black porcelain and parian- an unglazed porcelain-like clay which was developed in the 1800s as a substitute for marble.

Lees explores the qualities that manifest when you transform a simple line into a solid object, studying sections, their silhouettes and shadows. His work attempts to blur the lines between digital and analogue techniques.

I love how looking at his pieces from different angles completely changes the feel of them, I had never really thought of playing around with my work like this before.

I'm not sure whether he uses the ceramic pieces to draw with or it is just photographed with a supplementary drawing; I like the comparison between the fresh, crisp lines of the porcelain and the blurry, inky ones.
